Does the Domain Name Matter?

In short, yes! When choosing a domain name it is important to try and register an easy to remember name, also ask yourself “can i say the domain to people over the phone without having to spell it out?“. For instance, if you buy a domain called Widgets4U.com, sure it might be easy to remember but you’ll be forced to spell it out over the phone to folks….. “no it’s the number ‘4′, it’s not spelled ‘four’ or ‘for’ and the U is not spelled ‘you’, it’s the actual letter ‘U’…oh forget it!….”. Can you imagine the headache of that? you could always buy all the domains widgits4u.com widgitsfouryou.com widgitsforyou.com etc and point them all to the main domain, but let’s face it, it’s not ideal.

Now, we all know that choosing a great catchy name can be pretty easy using the 2 rules of ‘easy to remember’ and ‘don’t have to spell it out’. But what if your domain name is already taken? Well, first of all – don’t give up on that fact that it’s not available, you should investigate to see if the owner will sell it to you first, not all domains cost millions. If that’s a no go, then keep plodding along, use your thesaurus for help in related words, if you can’t get your business name, choose a name that describes your business, if you can’t get that, choose a name that joins the two into a unique name.
