Google Supports Earth Hour
Google, the world’s most popular internet search engine, has shown its commitment to the environment and to energy conservation by temporarily changing their homepage background color to black. This exercise was done to help raise awareness of an ongoing worldwide energy conservation effort known as Earth Hour. The goal of this exercise is to encourage computer users to support the Climate Savers Computing Initiative by turning off their lights from 8pm to 9pm in their respective time zones on March 29, 2008.
A cathode ray tube (CRT) monitor uses approximately 74 watts to display an all white web page, but only uses 59 watts to display the same content on an all black page. Energy conservationists estimate that approximately 25% of the monitors in the world are cathode ray tubes.
