Google Wave May Affect Online Marketing

Even though it is yet to be released publicly, Google Wave, the new real-time collaborative tool from Google, seems very promising. But it remains to be seen how it will affect online marketing.

From the demo videos available, the Wave, among other things, combines instant messaging and email, although with a twist. As you type your entry in a thread or ‘wave,’ if the other person to whom you’re sending a message, in the same wave is online, that person will see the very characters you type appear on his side of the wave, as you type them – character per character. In that aspect it has the immediacy effect of instant messaging.

Some online marketing professionals have wondered how ads could be integrated in to Google Wave, it’s a big question whether the business model behind this collaborative platform.

Still, the real quirk of Google Wave lies elsewhere. First, you can share the thread or wave with others, and they can also see the thread of conversation as though they were in a forum thread or social networking site.

One feature of Google’s Wave is a thread-like sharing capability to ‘embedded’ the chat log into a blog. If a blog using the wave feature gets a comment, the owner can respond from his wave platform even without logging into the blog. The blog also gets updated in real time: just as the person types comments or uploads photos, the comments appear as they are typed.

Some critics have pointed out that the wave might have a problems being ported for smartphone use, given how large the three-column menu of the wave interface is. Currently, Google has allowed developers time to play with the Wave and see what refinements could be made.
