How to get listed in the DMOZ directory!

Posted on Wednesday 13 August 2008

The Open Directory Project (also called ODP or DMOZ), is probably the most important internet directory to be listed in, as its listings are used by Google, and most other search engines and directories.

Here’s a quick guide to get listed on DMOZ.org

1. The first step is to choose the appropriate category for your website from the various categories provided. Do a thorough analysis before choosing the right directory. Be sure to read all the instructions very carefully.
2. Now, click the ’suggest URL’ link and start filling the application.
3. Submit your home page to only one category, multiple submissions will be treated as spam.
4. Do not use automated submission software, it will guarantee rejection.
5. Be sure to fill in the URL and the title of your page.
6. Next, write a brief description of your website; be very objective and give a simple description of your site, its features and benefits.
7. Fill in the other details such as email and verification code.
8. Finally, do a double check on all the details entered and click the submit button.

If you did everything right, and if your site is found to be suitable, you will hear from DMOZ, although it don’t expect a response overnight, many people wait several months to get included into the directory.
