Marketing Hard to Pronounce Words
Psychological Science recently published a study that says if a word is hard to pronounce, people will assume that whatever the word represents, is risky.
The subjects of the study viewed two made-up names for food additives and had to make the decision which additive was the most dangerous. The same thing was asked with names of roller coasters. The subjects were asked which ride was more exciting and more apt to make people ill. It did not matter if the risk was something desirable like a roller coaster ride or some undesirable like a unhealthy additive in your food. The hard to pronounce words were considered to be risky.
This is something you should keep in mind when you perform your online marketing, name a product or purchase a domain name. Use common names for things and if you must use a word that is difficult to pronounce, tell people what the word rhymes with or spell out the pronunciation.
You want visitors to your website to feel comfortable and people view what is familiar as being less risky. People will make their decision based on a ‘comfort factor’ even if they have no information to base their decision on.
