Tips on Writing a Good Marketing Plan

The fast-changing business world can make current knowledge obsolete within months. An effective online marketing plan for your small business will have to be played by ear, and articulated through trial and error. However, it should not be left to chance. Here are some tips to help you make a winning marketing plan.

Know your market. You need to know for whom you will be generating a marketing campaign. You need to clearly identify which demographics will buy your products or services.

Decide on your mission statement. Keep it short, down to four sentences. Make it state how your business will serve your customers. Your mission statement should not contain fluff. It should be concise and clear.

Analyze your market. Use customer surveys, focus group discussions, interviews, etc. These will further define who you’re selling to. You might also need to categorize your target customers into gender, income, or age brackets.

Align your product/service with your customer profile. You may not be able to sell to someone who doesn’t need or can’t afford your product. So keep asking about what you’re selling and to whom you’re selling it to.

Set a budget. It doesn’t have to be large, but the campaign should bring back results. So decide how much money you can pour into promotion. You also need to decide which media to use. Although online advertising might be enticing, sometimes you can generate addtional sales in a small town using fliers, radio or TV spots or even billboards. If this is the case, you should be sure to include these methods in your overall marketing campaign.

Measure the results. You have to stack up the numbers and see how much you spent for marketing that affected sales. Find out which media you get more responses from. You need to collate data and interpret it.

Review the results, revise accordingly. Sometimes a cross-media campaign brings more results than merely sticking to radio and television. Review the results and be ready to cut or add funding to specific campaigns, or stop certain campaigns and come up with totally new ones.
