Tactics Used by Contestants in the SEO World Championship
The Search Engine Optimization Championships are not for the weak. If you take part, be prepared to lose sleep. Some online marketing participants make it to the number one slot and keep it there for two days till the deadline, only to slide down in ranking some fifteen minutes before cut off. This means the entire competition period is a tense one, where no hours or minutes are to be wasted in generating links and enticing visits. Your content gets better exposure and visits when people actually find them interesting.
The main tactic most used by the SEO participants would have to be the human element that loves controversy and scandal. Something that smells of intrigue and maybe cataclysm. The contest assigns a particular keyphrase around which you have to optimize, but that doesn’t mean there are a lot of people looking for that keyphrase or its variants. So, the first step is to incite controversy. The best place to do that is through social media marketing tools like YouTube, Facebook, Digg and Twitter.
The more controversial the tweet, Digg description or caption in YouTube, the more likely people will visit your site. The trick is to wow them during their first visit, enough for them to RSS your site. When they do so, you can then follow their links and leave messages with links on their site. Naturally, it’s up to you to generate content that whets their appetite. Toward this, you will have to search the web for anything you can twist to fit the keyphrases and its related topics. So you need to recycle existing material or invent controversial content to generate visits. Since the contest only runs for a short time, you could characterize it as online advertising on steroids.
