What is “Cookie-Stuffing”?

Posted on Monday 3 November 2008

In an article titled “Cookie-Stuffing Targeting Major Affiliate Merchants” by Harvard researcher Benjamin Edelman, the author explores another internet-based scam known as “cookie stuffing”. A basic explanation of this activity is basically when “some affiliates use “cookie-stuffing” methods to cause affiliate merchants’ tracking systems to conclude that a user has clicked through a tracking link (and to pay commissions accordingly) even if the user has not actually clicked through any such link”.

This practice is just one of many fraudulent activities that are committed online. Edelman’s extensive research reveals a way in which unscrupulous affiliates can increase their profits undeservedly. This practice primarily affects businesses that engage in legitimate techniques for gaining popularity for their websites in an effort to increase sales.

Typical web browser and online shoppers are not aware of this practice since it is both invisible to them and it doesn’t directly impact their online shopping experience.
